Soluble silicates are used in a number of paint and surface coating applications. Potassium silicates are generally preferred, as sodium silicate can react with atmospheric carbon dioxide forming unwanted, white carbonate deposits on the surface.

Potassium silicates are also used for zinc rich anti-corrosion coatings, which when cured are completely water resistant.
