Pulp and paper manufacture

Soluble silicates are used extensively in hydrogen peroxide bleaching of both virgin fibre and recycled fibre (RCF). They stabilise peroxide by binding transition metals such as iron, copper and manganese, which would otherwise catalyse premature oxygen release.

With RCF, the soil suspending properties of soluble silicates aid the removal of ink particles from the paper fibre.
